Why is anesthesia important for cats during dental cleanings?

Anesthesia allows the veterinary team to safely and thoroughly clean a cat’s teeth, including areas below the gumline that cannot be properly cleaned while a cat is awake. A breathing tube is also placed during the procedure to help protect the airway and prevent water, saliva, and dental debris from entering the lungs while the teeth are being cleaned.
